Getting started

What is Lumora?
Lumora makes personalized illustrated children's storybooks. You pick your child, a theme, and (optionally) a moment to capture. We craft a unique story where your child is the hero — name, looks, family, even pets — in about three minutes.
Is there really a free first story?
Yes. Your first story is free and FULLY yours — every page, with narrated audio and the PDF download — no card required. After you create a free account you can also make 2 more stories as free samples: a sample shows its first 5 pages in full (text, art, audio); from page 6 the pages sit behind a frosted glass that deepens page by page, until any subscription lifts it. Subscribe before using your samples and the unused ones turn into full story credits on your account.

Stories

Can you tell me what happens in a locked free sample?
Sorry — we can't spoil a free sample before it's unlocked. The first 5 pages are yours to read; the rest stay behind frosted glass on purpose, so the ending is a surprise. Subscribe to any plan and the whole story opens up — every page, narrated, with the PDF.
How long does generation take?
Usually 1–2 minutes — about 80 seconds for toddler/preschool stories (12 pages), up to roughly 2 minutes for older-reader stories (16 pages). We stream the text and fire the illustrations in parallel, so the cover and first pages start appearing well before the whole book is finished.
Can I edit a story after it's made?
Not directly — Lumora stories are designed to feel handcrafted. But if you don't love how one turned out, just make another one. You can also pick a different moment, theme, or sibling combo for variety.
What languages are supported?
Today: English and Chinese (full). Beta: Spanish, French, German. We add more as we test them with native-reading parents.
What ages does Lumora work for?
Ages 1-12, with the story craft tuned to four reading tiers — toddler (1-3), preschool (4-5), early reader (6-7), and older reader (8-12). Vocabulary, pacing, and the shape of the arc adjust to match. We also support pet protagonists for animal-loving families.
Can my two kids both be in the same story?
Yes. On the Create page, pick two heroes — they'll co-star with genuinely different roles (often the older notices and leads, the younger sparks the magic).

Billing & subscriptions

How much does it cost?
Your first story is free in full, no card — and on the free plan you can make 2 more as free samples (first 5 pages free, then a page-by-page frosted preview; subscribing unlocks them completely, and unused samples become story credits when you subscribe). Every story on every PAID tier comes with narrated audio and a downloadable PDF. The plans: - **Free**: 1 full story + 2 free samples - **Storyteller**: $15.99/mo — 4 stories a month, 15% off hardcovers - **Family**: $22.99/mo or $229/yr — 10 stories a month, family sharing, 25% off hardcovers - **Heirloom**: $39.99/mo or $399/yr — 15 stories a month, family sharing, 33% off hardcovers Hardcover keepsake books are $49.99 + shipping (members save 15–33%).
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open your profile page and look for the "Account controls" section at the bottom — the link there takes you to your account data, where you can cancel a subscription or delete the account entirely. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep every story you've already made. If you can't find the option, write to hello@lumora.kids and we'll cancel by hand within a few hours.
What's your refund policy?
Digital purchases (subscriptions, single stories, narration): full refund within 7 days, no questions asked, as long as fewer than 3 stories have been created with the purchase — just ask in the help chat or reply to your receipt email. Once 3 or more stories have been created, the no-questions refund no longer applies, though genuine problems (a failed generation, a duplicate charge) always get a human review. If a story fails to generate, we refund that purchase automatically — you don't even need to ask. Hardcover books: full refund if it arrives damaged or if you're not happy within 30 days of delivery.
How do I get an invoice?
Open your Stripe Customer Portal from your profile. All your past invoices are listed and downloadable as PDF.

Hardcover books

What does the hardcover look like?
A5 portrait hardcover (14.8 × 21 cm), 28 pages on premium paper. Your cover scene wraps the front and back. Matte or glossy finish — your choice.
How long does shipping take?
Printing plus international delivery is typically 2–4 weeks door to door. You'll get a tracking link by email as soon as your book ships.
How much is shipping?
Flat and duties-included: $19.99 to the US, $9.99 everywhere else we ship. The exact fee shows at checkout before you pay.
My book arrived damaged — what now?
We're so sorry. Email us a photo at hello@lumora.kids and we'll ship a replacement free, no need to return the original. Your child still gets the book they're waiting for.

Photos & likeness

Why upload photos?
Photos make the illustrated child look more like your real child. Without photos we use a written description (~60% likeness). With photos we use them as a visual reference for the illustrator (~85% likeness).
What happens to the photos?
It depends on which mode you chose: - Description-only mode: we read the photo once (via Claude Vision), save a written description, then discard the image immediately. The photo never gets stored. - Visual-reference mode: we keep the photo (encrypted) in your hero's profile and use it as a visual reference each time we illustrate a story for that hero. It stays in your profile until you remove it, delete the hero, or delete your account. In both cases: the photo is NEVER used to train any AI model — yours, ours, Anthropic's, anyone's. It's a per-generation reference input, not training data. You can delete photos any time from your profile.
What kind of photos work best?
Good lighting, clear face, a few different angles and expressions. Five photos is the sweet spot — enough variation for the model to capture how your child looks across moods. Avoid sunglasses, hats covering the face, or heavy filters.

Your account

How do I delete my account?
Go to your profile and scroll all the way to the bottom — the "Account controls" footer has a link reading "Export or delete your data." That opens /account/data, where you can see everything we hold for you and trigger deletion. We email a confirmation link; once you click it, all your data is permanently removed within minutes. Stories you've already paid for stay readable through their private links.
Can I export my data?
Yes. /account/data (reachable from the "Account controls" link at the bottom of your profile) shows everything we hold — heroes, family, stories, orders — and has a button to download it all as JSON.
I forgot my password
Use the "Forgot password" link on the sign-in page. We sign in through Clerk, so the reset link comes from them.

Safety & privacy

Is the content safe for my child?
We have a multi-layer automated safety system: forbidden-word filters, an AI safety judge that reads every draft, age-tier-specific rules, and a critique-revise editor. No story ships if it fails safety review.
Do you train AI on my child's data?
Never. We don't use your child's name, photos, or stories to train any model — not ours, not Anthropic's, not anyone's. This is in our Terms and we enforce it technically.
Are you COPPA compliant?
Yes. Lumora is a parent-facing service — children don't sign up directly. We don't show ads, we don't run third-party trackers, and we comply with COPPA's requirements for children's content.
